Mill House stands next to the historic mill in the Hunter Valley town of Scone, and was originally the millers cottage dating from the mid 19th century with later additions. The clients were moving to the house from their family farm, and wanted to provide additional accommodation. The project comprised a new open plan kitchen/family room, study and utility room on the ground floor, two additional bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs, a verandah flowing to the garden, and attached garage. The addition was designed in keeping with the historic character of the cottage, and was carefully integrated with it, both internally and externally, to improve the flow of spaces and create pleasant places to sit. Great care was also taken to integrate the house with the garden, especially to maximise the perception of privacy and space typical of a country garden on what was actually quite a small urban plot. The design was undertaken by Ranald Boydell as project architect for Suters Architects in 1999.
