Balabudgee is a modern working farmhouse, constructed of rammed earth, situated on a low rise looking north across a broad valley near Mudgee in central New South Wales. The design is in a simple contemporary style, drawing on traditional vernacular forms and materials. Accommodation comprises a large open plan living/dining/kitchen space with raked ceiling and expansive views out to the garden and beyond, four bedrooms plus an office, sewing room and utility spaces. An attached garage creates a gravelled entrance court on one side and a sheltered courtyard garden on the other. All external walls, and the main internal dividing wall, are constructed of rammed earth. The earthen walls lend their unique colour and texture to the house both internally and externally, and are a particular feature of the living space. The thermal mass provided by the walls helps to maintain a comfortable internal air temperature is a climate of hot summers and cold winters. Construction was completed in 2007.
